Bioteka: The Greenest Library in Europe

A Complete Project Inspired by Nature and Sustainable Development

The Bioteka project, designed by Grzegorz Kloda, has been hailed as probably the greenest library in Europe. This unique public library, located in the heart of Lublin, Poland, is not only architecturally inspired by nature but also promotes an ecological lifestyle and the idea of sustainable development through its didactic program.

The inspiration for Bioteka came from the successful revitalization of the 19th-century Saxon Garden, also known as the green heart of Lublin. This revitalization, which took place in 2012/13, was highly praised by the local community. The library, situated in the center of Lublin, was designed to be an extension of the garden, with a focus on building environmental awareness and actively promoting sustainable development.

What sets Bioteka apart is its commitment to being a complete project. Not only is the interior architecture inspired by nature, but the librarians also implement a didactic program that educates visitors about ecology and sustainable living. The library has been designed to be as green as possible, using recycled wood, collected greenery from the citizens of Lublin, a water wall that gives the effect of trickling water, and contemporary stone.

Bioteka, a personalized branch of the Municipal Public Library in Lublin, is fully dedicated to ecology. With an area of 453 square meters and a collection of almost 30 thousand books, it serves as a modern and green cultural institution in the heart of the city. The library actively propagates all ideas connected with ecology and offers a unique space for ecological education.

One of the most interesting initiatives of Bioteka is the collection of plants from the citizens of Lublin. This act of involving the community in the library's greenery has deepened the bond between the residents and the library. Visitors can come and see "their" plants inside Bioteka, fostering a sense of ownership and connection.

The Bioteka project was realized in 2019 and opened its doors to the public in 2020/2021. Despite its recent opening, it has already received recognition in Polish and international architectural competitions. The library's design is a result of extensive research and analysis of user needs, with a focus on creating a unique identity that resonates with the local community.

Grzegorz Kloda and his team overcame various challenges during the design process, including the pressure of social expectations and speculation about what should be built in such a prominent location. However, they embraced the challenge and created something special—a functional, modern library that offers creative librarians the flexibility to utilize the space in various ways.

Bioteka is not just a library; it is a symbol of sustainable development and a testament to the power of design in promoting ecological awareness. With its unique approach to architecture, educational programs, and community involvement, Bioteka stands as a shining example of a green cultural institution.
